Probably, you did not see Samos(Σάμoς) on the “Top 10 Greek Islands to Visit” lists. Furthermore, Samos was not one of the highlighted Greek Islands’, many travel guides and travel blogs that you have read before.

But this island has a charm of its own and I am here to share with you in my detailed Samos Travel Guide.

For the reason that Samos is underrated in the digital world, one mustn’t be confused about its beauty. One of the greenest and most fertile of all Aegean Islands, Samos is appealing with its history, traditional villages, archaeological sites, crystal clear waters, green mountains, emerald beaches, and even more great food.

About Samos

Samos is a stone’s throw away from the Turkish mainland and the mile-wide Mycale Strait separates the island from Turkish coast. Due to its location, Samos is a place who wants to island-hop between the Greek islands and to visit Turkey.


Pythagorion Village, Samos Travel Guide

With a population of  34.000 and 468 km² surface, Samos is the 9th most populous of all Greek islands. Samos is in the North Aegean Island group. Other North Aegean islands in this group are; Lesvos (Mytilini), Chios, Thassos, Samothrace, Limnos, Ikaria, also smaller islands Agios Efstratios, Fourni, Psara, and Innouses.

Weather In Samos

The climate is Mediterranean, which means the summers are hot and the winters are mild with occasional rain. The daily average temperature ranges from 10 °C (50 °F) in January and February. In July and August, the average temperature is 27 °C (81 °F).

The peak season in Samos is July to September but you can certainly enjoy Samos from late spring to early fall.

History of Samos

History of Samos island dates back to 6000 B.C. Samos was an important commercial and marine center. Furthermore, it was a big cultural center. The father of Mathematics, Pythagoras and astronomer Aristarchus are both Samian origin. Samos is the birthplace of the Goddess Hera, the goddess of marriage and birth and also Zeus’ wife, according to Greek mythology.
